Meeting, April 1st, 2009

Dear Club,

Tonight's meeting was attended by seven people, excluding myself. For those that weren't there, should be most of you, here's what we discussed:

* Bake Sale: taking place tomorrow, April 2, outside Sharkey's from 10pm-2am. Please volunteer to earn hours if you can. Also, donating food to sell will earn you an hour. Proceeds benefit Relay for Life
* Relay for Life: if you would like to help set up or take down Relay, send an e-mail to volunteer@vt.edu informing them you would like to help. Hours worked there will count towards the necessary number for this semester
* Big Event: the last day to sign up to volunteer at the Big Event is this Friday. Send me an e-mail with your name and t-shirt size so I can register you

PLEASE COME TO NEXT WEEK'S MEETING. We need to discuss who is going to bring what to Relay in terms of overnight entertainment, food, beverages, things of that nature. We will also discuss officer positions and nominations next meeting and likely hold elections within the next few weeks.

April's drive will be our last for the year. It is likely going to be only a two-day drive: the 28th and 29th.

Meeting, December 3rd, 2008

So first thing, BANQUET next Tuesday December 9. It will be at 6:30 at the Foxridge Club house. (At the 4-way stop take a left, and then take your first left). There will be a 10 hour requirement for free food. If you can drive people to the banquet, or if you need a ride, send me an email with your phone number and I can get you in contact with someone that can give you a ride/needs a ride. We will be having Pizza and Chinese food. Here is a link to the survey on what food you want:

Also, if you need more hours to reach the 9 hours to be a member, or 10 for free dinner at banquet there is a blood drive in Torg tomorrow from 11-5. You can go and help or donate. There will be a sign in sheet, and those hours will be tallied in before banquet.

Next, Christmas store in Christiansburg will be December 9-13th (next Tuesday-Saturday). There are lots of things to do, and they can use all the help they can get. Kelsey will be sending out an email with available hours, so email her about when you want to work. Those hours will go toward your hours for next semester.

Relay for life is coming up. We have two teams set up, so if you are interested in joining a team you need to sign up online. There is a $10 fee, but you also get a free t-shirt. To sign up for our teams go to vt.relay.org and click on the sign up button. Then go to sign up for a team. Our team names are Second Baseman and Second Baseman 2. Make sure you check both teams, so we can have roughly even numbers. (We will be near each other all night also so don't worry if you are on one team and your friend is on another) If you have any questions or are having trouble signing up e-mail Heather (hllewis@vt.edu) or Kelsey (kalanza@vt.edu). And remember don't let breast cancer steal second base.

Lastly, blood sits will be the week we get back from break. There will be a minimum of 12 hours needed for membership next semester. (3 for each drive) There will be a sign up sheet for sits sent out over break.

Other than that, see you at Banquet, and if you can't make it have a good break and Happy Holidays.

Please contact the webmaster who will be announced next semester, if you'd like to be removed from this listserv. State whether you'd like to be on the redcross alumni listserv instead (the alumni listserv will be used to let you know about major social events the club would like you to join us for).

Meeting, October 29th, 2008

So the meeting tonight was short and sweet. First off we have a bake sale this Friday (yes on Halloween) outside of Sharkey's. If you would like to volunteer email David, he has the sign up sheet. If you don't want to volunteer to work the bake sale you can bring baked goods. (You will get an hour) Bring them around 9 and separated and wrapped up (either with saran wrap or a plastic bag, or something) in what you feel is a dollars worth.

Next, blood sits are next week already. They are Monday, outside West End, and Tuesday, Wednesday, outside D2, from 10-4. You can sign up. Collin will be sending out the sign up sheets soon.

We have some service opportunities coming up for those of you who still need hours. On November 7-9 the YMCA will be having a craft fair at University Mall. There is lots of stuff to do all day, so email Kelsey if it is something you are interested in. We also have Relay for life teams started. We could use some more people so if you are interested e-mail Kelsey (kalanza@vt.edu) and she will get you the information so you can register.

In two weeks we will not be having our usual meeting. The week of the blood drive (November 12) we are planning on going bowling. We are going in Squires, so even those of you who are on campus, or without a car you can still come. If you would be interested email Erin at egm1120@vt.edu so she can get an estimate so we know how many lanes to reserve.

Also we have a sweatshirt design ready which you can see at the next meeting. You can also go ahead and pre-order one in your size. Other than that have a Happy Halloween and we will see you next week at 8pm in Derring 1090.

Please contact Stephen Dolenc at sdolenc@vt.edu if you'd like to be removed from this listserv. State whether you'd like to be on the redcross alumni listserv instead (the alumni listserv will be used to let you know about major social events the club would like you to join us for).

Meeting, October 2nd, 2008

Ok so last nights meeting was pretty short, but productive. First off, last weeks drive we met 84 % of goal. That's awesome; we have never gotten that many people. The goal was 200 and we ended up collecting 168 units of blood, so good job and thanks for all those who helped out.

Next, I know it seems early, but we are starting our Relay for Life teams. Right now we have two teams and if you are interested you can sign up for a team at the next meeting. We can only have 15 people a team, but if there are more than 30 people interested we can start a third team. We are going to be doing a bake sale down town to kick off fundraising sometime this month (date: TBA).

Next, the Humane Society was a big hit. So we will be doing another weekend. The tentative date is Oct. 19th. If you don't know what the humane society is, it is an animal shelter, and we volunteer to go and walk the dogs and play with the cats. It helps the animals and it is pretty good stress relief too. We will have hour-long shifts again, and we are trying to arrange it so more than 4 people an hour can go. The sign up will be at the next meeting.

TODAY, there is a blood drive in Torg (the same place we had it in last week) from 12-6. If you have a free moment today try to drop by and give blood, or if you cant, talk one of your friends into doing it. (You do get an hour for donating)

It is a tradition for the Red Cross club to go camping. We are going October 24- 25 (Friday night to Saturday morning). If you are interested there will be a sign up sheet. We usually bring some kind of food like hot dogs or burgers, and drinks and yes we will have smores.

For the October drive blood sits will be the 13th-15th. That is a MONDAY, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The first two days are outside Owens, and the last day is in front of D2. Sign ups for sits will be at the next meeting. The drive will be the 21st-23rd. All three days are in cassell.

Other than that if you have any ideas for fundraisers bring them to a meeting. Also we will be doing sweatshirts so if you have any suggestions bring those too. The next meeting will be Wednesday October 8 in Derring 1090. Hope to see you all there.

Please contact Stephen Dolenc at sdolenc@vt.edu if you'd like to be removed from this listserv. State whether you'd like to be on the redcross alumni listserv instead (the alumni listserv will be used to let you know about major social events the club would like you to join us for).

Meeting, September 18th, 2008

First off, ALL of the appointments for next week's drive are full! However, we will still have blood sits tomorrow. They will be outside of West End until 1:30. We will be setting appointments for the Donor Center at Kent Square (above Ben and Jerry's and next to the Tan Co.) Also we will be setting appointments for Delta Sigma Phi's see-saw-a-thon. They will have a blood mobile outside of War Memorial next Thursday.

Blood Drive next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Tuesday and Wednesday are in Torg 1100 and Thursday is in Cassell. If you want an extra hour you can bake or buy something for the drive (cookies, brownies, etc.). At the drive wear your Red Cross Club T-shirt or if you don't have one yet wear a Tech shirt. (We will bring the t-shirts on Oct 1 when dues are due so everyone that needs one will get it then) Also you have to wear close-toed shoes. (If you wear flip-flops you will have to put on paper booties) If you still need training you can get it at the drive.

Dues are due by October 1 (Blake Bredehoft's Birthday). It is $20 per semester or $35 for the year for new members. If you are returning it will be $5 dollars less ($15, or $30) because you won't be getting a new shirt.

September 28, 2008 we will be going to the Humane Society. At the Human society we walk the dogs and play with the cats. Kelsey has the sign up sheet so if you are interested in going you can email her (kalanza@vt.edu). You will get a service hour if you go.

Also there will not be a meeting next week. So we will see you in two weeks. Also we are going to get sweatshirts again this year, so bring ideas for a new design.

Please contact Stephen Dolenc at sdolenc@vt.edu if you'd like to be removed from this listserv. State whether you'd like to be on the redcross alumni listserv instead (the alumni listserv will be used to let you know about major social events the club would like you to join us for).

Meeting, September 11th, 2008

The Red Cross club mainly helps the Red Cross organize and run the blood drives one campus, however, we also several other service activities in the community. Some big ones are humane society, Relay for life, and the Big Event, among others. We are always looking for new ideas as well so feel free to bring some to the meeting.

Dues for the club are $35 a year, or $20 per semester. Your Red Cross Club T-shirt that you will wear at blood drives is included in your dues. Returning members however, will only be $30 a year or $15 a semester because you will not be getting a new shirt this year. They will be due by Oct. 1st, but feel free to bring them to an earlier meeting.

This year we are instituting a minimum hour requirement. You have to have at least 3 hours per blood drive (1 at the sits and 2 at the drive) to stay a member. This semester that means you need at least 9 hours of service. At the end of the semester we do have a banquet in which the top 20%-30% of members with the most hours will get their dinner paid for just as a little motivation to do more than the minimum.

Our first blood drive is in 2 weeks. It will be the 23, 24, and 25 of September. The 23 and 24 will be in Torg 1100 and the 25 will be in the West (McCommas) side of Cassell. This means our blood sits, which are when we sit on campus and try to recruit people to sign up for appointments to donate blood, are the week before. They will be the 16, 17, and 18. The 16th will be in front of D2, the 17th will be at the X in the drill field, and the 18th will be outside of West end.

If you missed the meeting there will be another one next week at 8pm in Derring 1090, so please come out. Hope to see you there.

Please contact Stephen Dolenc at sdolenc@vt.edu if you'd like to be removed from this listserv. State whether you'd like to be on the redcross alumni listserv instead (the alumni listserv will be used to let you know about major social events the club would like you to join us for).

Meeting, September 4th, 2008

Sorry this is a bit late.

Dues for the club will be $20/semester or $35 for the year for new members. If you are a returning member it is $15/semester or $30 for the year because you won't be getting a new shirt. Also this year we will have a minimum hour requirement to stay a member. You will need 9 hours(three each drive) this semester to stay in the club.

Also we may be getting a new adviser. Tracy, our contact at the red cross, might become either the adviser or co-adviser along with Steve Schnyder, a Graduate student here at Tech.

This Friday (tomorrow) is Gobblerfest. It is a free student festival being held in front of Squires. From 2-3 we, along with many clubs of Virginia Tech, will be having a booth. So if you aren't signed up to help out, feel free to stop by and say hi.

The September blood drives will be from the 23-25. The 23 and 24 will be held in the Torg Museum (its on the first floor) and the 25 drive with be held in Cassel. The blood sits will be the previous week on the 16-18. Don't worry we will have the sign-up for both the sits and the drives at the next meeting.

We are also looking into more service projects, and fund raisers for the club. If you have any ideas feel free to bring them to the meeting. Other than that see you at the meeting next Wednesday at 8.

For our blood drive next week we had a blood drive baked goods sign up again if you didn't sign up still make things if you want and then write it down or tell an officer.

1st Meeting, January 16th, 2008

Hey guys in the meeting this week we mainly had changes made to the club and a few event announcements for the future. We voted to amend the constitution, mainly spelling errors and upgrading in the sections of club positions and the impeachment and election processes. We are also changing the blood sit times to 30 minute shifts and sent around a member's phone log. The blood drives have been given themes, this one will be a winter theme and the next one will be a Valentines Day theme.

As far as new event information goes we will look further into CPR training for club members. We will be having a membership drive January 30th. Relay for life will be 4/18-19 and we signed up for teams and will begin organizing the teams. If interested email an executive member or ask about it at the next meeting.

A new service project the New River Valley used book donation will be in February from the 7th-10th also the humane society will be an open thing to help at, simply go and tell an executive member that you went and the hour will be recorded.

We will begin discussing a dinner event where the proceeds go to help rid places of minefields. This will be made clearer at future meetings.

The blood drive next week is in need of food donations, if you can help out or have an idea about how we can get food feel free to share.

IMPORTANT: for next meeting come up with ideas for sweatshirts and tee shirt designs because we will be redesigning them.

Any ideas, comments, or corrections please email me so I can fix them have a good weekend.

There is one last event to participate in and this is the Christmas store in Christiansburg. You will help run a store that sells used things at a minimum price to underprivileged families i nthe area. This will be open to help Thursday the 6th of December from 12:30-5 and the 7th a Friday from 5- 8:30 contact Meghan for information if you are interested

Finally there is one last blood drive (not run by us) and they will need some serious donors to if you are able to give or know someone who can make sure to encourage them to donate on December 3rd a Monday

9th Meeting, October 24th, 2007

The minutes for 10-24-07 are as follows:

Blood Drive will be November 13th, 14th, and 15th
(There will be a business group advertising this drive which will make things easier as far as slots being filled.)

We have decided that most of the engage people should mainly try and participate through the main Red Cross and help out at drives that we aren't participating in.

As for projects coming up we have speculation about holding a sign up for National Bone Marrow donation, nothing set yet. We also have the opportunity to help out with the Special Olympics at bowling from 7-9 on Thursdays located in Christiansburg. The cost to you will be $4 if you're interested. To help out contact an executive member of the Red Cross Club. We also have the Home For The Holidays event which would require you to donate food and provide the food by the November 14th meeting. If you are a girl with a prom dress you are not using or are willing to donate please find them and bring them in before springtime for girls to wear to prom.

Habitat for Humanity is still T.B.A. as is C.P.R. training. Mark your calendars for our first food Social November 7th it will be a Thanksgiving Pot Luck located in Derring 1090 unless someone has an idea for a different location. Remember to have pre-cooked items as there will be no heating devices.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and remember there is NO MEETING next week so enjoy the week off. Have a Happy Halloween!

1st VT Engage Meeting, October 24th 2007

At the first meeting we had to discuss how people who have signed up through VT Engage could help the Red Cross Club. We discussed the opportunity to help out the Red Cross by going to Kent Square and donating your time to the main branch of the Red Cross in our area. As for the 10 hours of donation we feel it is possible to do if you donate your time to the Red Cross as well not necessarily through our club directly.

If you are interested two things you can participate in is helping the Red Cross move out of their office building next to the Movie Gallery that is going out of business or you can help with the Special Olympics on Thursdays from 7-9 the cost to you ill be $4 to bowl. If you are interested in helping with either reply to one of the executive committee members found on the website or reply to this email.

Don't forget that you are not logging your engage hours with our club you will do it online at engage.vt.edu. More info will be sent through emails on the listserve.

8th Meeting, October 17th, 2007

Sorry this one is a little late I've had a busy week. Not too much was discussed at the executive meeting just a few things in detail. The people who have signed up for their volunteer hours for VT Engage were brought up about whether they can donate for hours as well as help and whether they could also volunteer at the donor center.

We also discussed the fact that our group is rather large this year and maybe we should expand the amount of things we do in the group as to spread out the workload and not to have things overcrowded. We also discussed hours and if the requirements should be changed for certain things.

We will try and raise an interest in getting a group together to get certified in CPR training, sign ups will be at the next meeting.

Some opportunities for volunteering in things other than blood drives are coming up like, Special Olympics, Food Donation, Prom Dress Donation, Share Program, Chip, Book sale, and Drivers for the Elderly. If you have any questions or are interested in doing these things ask an executive member to help you. Sign ups for some of these things will be at the next meeting.

The blood sits were being considered as to either they can be organized a little better and an idea was thrown around about getting a picture of everyone in the club so names can be put to faces. Hope everyone has a good rest of the weekend and see you all Wednesday

7th Meeting, October 10th, 2007

Hey guys only a few things this week. VT Engage will happen on Tuesday October 16 from 3:30-7 on the Drillfield. Don't forget to split gas with your drivers and enjoy yourselves this weekend.

Updated Inofrormation by Priya:

Hey guys,

After investigating the camping site some more, we found that the location we picked is actually farther away than we thought (about an hour and a half). I looked up some stuff last night after the meeting and decided that a different location might be better. It is called Wind Rock and is closer to Blacksburg, so those of you who are not planning to spend the night might have an easier time getting there and leaving when you need to. Everything else stays the same, i.e. only the location is changing. We will leave at the same time, bring the same things that you signed up for and we will take care of the rest. This place is a little more rugged (no bathrooms) so come prepared. We can buy some rolls of tp and we'll work on getting a grill too. If anyone has one we canborrow, that would be great! Let me know. The directions follow. Let me know if you have any questions. See everyone tomorrow and DRESS WARMLY!!

Wind Rock

Head out of Blacksburg on US-460 West toward West Virginia. After approximately 10 miles, you will see a sign for Mountain Lake on Mountain Lake Road on your right. Follow the signs to Mountain Lake. You will drive through the resort andpast the actual lake and onto a dirt road. After approximately two miles on this dirt road, you will see a parking area with a sign that is War Spur. If you continue for another mile to two miles, you will reach another parking area with another sign that is for Wind Rock.

Wind Rock is a quarter mile hike that can be done in 10 minutes that goes up toa much more significant overlook into the Jefferson National Forest. It is, as the name implies, extremely windy on the overlook, so bring a coat regardless of the season. There is a very large camping area by Wind Rock, and it is extremely fun to camp there, especially when there is a full moon.

6th Meeting, October 3rd, 2007

Hey guys not too much to discuss this week, we talked about Blood Sits being Oct. 9th-11th (1 Hour required) and Blood Drive (potentially) Oct 16th-18th (2 Hours required).

VT Engage will begin Oct. 16th which, a campus wide service event is hoping to get each person to participate in 10 hours of community service. This is expected to go until the 16th of April. On the 16th there will be a booth to advertise the Red Cross Club as a vehicle for people to get these hours. This booth will be on the Drillfield from 4-7. Sign ups will be next week. The website to get more info is engage.vt.edu.

Camping will be Oct. 12th, we had sign ups for interest and will organize this more next week.

The Red Cross needs volunteers to help move from one location to another on Thursday and Friday of next week. If interested please contact Becca.

We also talked about if people are signing up for events they need to commit to this event or please contact someone with your cancellation so we can accommodate. Thank You. Hope everyone enjoys the long weekend and hope to see all at next week's meeting.

2nd Meeting, August 29th, 2007

Hey guys here are the minutes to Wed Aug. 29 meeting. We started off introducing the officers. We explained that blood drives are usually held about 30 days apart from each other and blood sits are generally held the week before. The blood sits are held on the drill field or around McBryde the sits prevent walk ins from being so overwhelming the day of the drives. Members are expected to be present for 2 hours per event.

We then discussed other events that will be held such as s Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, Humane Solciety, and the big event. We also discussed possibly visiting a nursing home as one of our events. The hours at these events will reward you at the end of the year at a banquet that will be held for the club.

Dues will be collected for the semester it is $20 or for the year it is $35. Sweatshirts are being sold for $15. Dues are required by September 12. Checks are preferred made out to VT Red Cross Club.

For club business Blood Sits this week were today (Friday) and on Monday the drive will be held from the 4th to the 6th. On Tuesday there will be less of a need for members at the drive due to another club helping. If you need training for the blood drive see Pryia Tuesday from 11-2 at the drive.

We discussed having a platelet drive later in the year. A phone number sheet will be passed out for the club and one already was arranged for the officers.

The doughnut fundraiser was mentioned again and one will be scheduled for before the Ohio game on September 15 in the morning.

After the meeting the officers discussed possibly getting together a group to learn CPR through our club. We discussed possibly camping Friday Oct. 12 and Humane Society October 9. Getting a Debit card for the Blood Drive account was also discussed.

Any comment or corrections feel free to contact me or send out an email. Hope everyone has a ticket for the game and has a good weekend. GO HOKIES!

1st Meeting, August 22nd, 2007

At the first meeting of the year we held elections. Congratulations and good luck to the newly elected officers.

After the elections we went into the services the blood drive members are involved with throughout the year including s Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Solciety, visiting nursing homes, and volunteering for the special olympics. We had a talk on trying to receive funding for food this year though no definite answers are in order yet. We went over that hours are important for members and will benefit if they are interested in the end of the year banquet.

On to other business the Organization Showcase is this Friday and will be held from 4-8P.M. in the Squires Commonwealth Ballroom.

Dues are being collected by September 12th. A whole year costs $35 and one semester will be $20. Sweatshirts will also be on sale for $15.

The blood sits are coming up Friday(8/31) and Monday(9/4) and the Blood Drive goes from Tuesday to Wednesday(9/4-9/6). Remember that training is necessary to all those new at the drives. See Priya for training.

A doughnut fundraiser was suggested for before football games where we would be going around tailgate areas selling doughnuts.

For the next meeting officers don't forget to dress with blood drive shirts or dress nicely because pictures will be taken. Also remember in 2 weeks we will try and hold the meeting at the Blood Drive center downtown. Hope everyone has had a good first week.
